Each psychology course aims at preparing students to practise as psychologists. However, this often means the ability and willingness to engage in a wide range of activities and do a number of applied tasks. In the teaching of Psychology, three activities play an important role: the research, the writing and the teaching of students. The philosophy of the teaching is based on the principle of the replacement of the Socratic method of teaching, according to which students are guided to develop their own critical skills and enhance their understanding of the subject matter by means of mental exercises and carefully designed assignments. Students are asked to communicate their ideas and the conclusions they draw from the topics covered in the course, both to each other and to the lecturer. They are expected to read, to write a research report and to engage in discussions.
The course follows a direct, stepwise format, with continuous revision of the topics covered. A typical day in the course covers a different social psychology topic in the first half and in the second half the student is also assigned a lengthy problem to work on. The topics are covered in sufficient detail to provide a solid foundation for further study and to give students the opportunity to apply what they have learned to their future field of work. We cover topics as close as possible to the real life situations, thereby assuring the student with some practical skills.
The course is designed to integrate the learning of content with the cognitive processes of students and is structured to challenge students at the highest level, thus assuring their success in obtaining the Bologna degree. We stress three aspects of learning: the substantial learning of the subject matter; basic knowledge of cognitive processes; and the development of independent, critical and analytical thinking. d2c66b5586
