In the poem, the mind is turned away from the senses (the moon, the birds, the distant bells), to look inward in meditation. In order to undertake this mental journey, the reader must learn to understand, in the first place, the syntactic syntax of Sor Juana's poem. This is what makes her dream so difficult: Sor Juana's fundamental motivation for making her dream is to see what she is seeing at the time she is dreaming, before she wakes up. She does this by subordinating multiple clauses and parenthetical expressions to make a single sentence, the first sentence of her dream.
