The below pictures show a counterfeit lighter. Notice the straight line serial number is not engraved, but rather stamped in a straight line. Fake Dupont lighters are sometimes sold in genuine boxes, with genuine ST Dupont warranty cards. Note the large white square border on this lighter. Also note, the serial number is placed slightly below the round white indentation that is the brand logo.
I have seen authentic lighters being sold in counterfeit boxes, with counterfeit warranty cards. The lighter in the first picture has a genuine Dupont ST DuPont warranty card. The lighter in the second picture is in a genuine Dupont box, with a counterfeit warranty card.
Fakes have a metal insert that makes it look real, but the bottom of the insert is chrome plate, real inserts are made of some type of plastic (or metal). In addition the insert is not as close to the lighter or screw as the genuine will be.
This lighter appears to be a counterfeit, until you notice that it has the 3 letter Dupont name and the ST Dupont logo on the lighter. Also, look at the bottom of the lighter where the serial numbers are, the numbers on the lighter are not aligned. These lighters also have the Dupont logo engraved into the metal.
Here are some counterfeit ST Dupont Ligne 2 lighters that look very similar to the genuine lighters, until you look at the numbers on the bottom, and notice that the numbers are not engraved, and are lined up perfectly.
Here are some serial numbers that are located on the bottom of the lighter, make sure you notice where the serial numbers are located. The numbers in this lighter are perfectly lined up. The numbers are engraved, and there is no straigth line where the numbers are.
The serial numbers are in the top two rows. The counterfeit lighter below shows a partially stamped serial number, the top of the lighter is coated in black to try to deceive the customer.
